| Lord Robert Baden-Powell, born 22nd February 1857, was educated at Charterhouse. He was a son of an Oxford geometry professor. He was recognized for military accomplishments during the Boer War.
Being a military officer, Baden-Powell was stationed in African and India in the 1880s. He loved military scouting and woodcraft. He would instruct his men on wilderness survival techniques to make them more independent. He wrote the book Aids to Scouting and was surprised to see that many boys were interested to find out more.
His next book Boy Patrols also did remarkably well. After this he took 21 boys to a 7-day camp on Brownsea Island in Dorset, England. He tested the Patrol System which had an elected leader. In 1907, Baden-Powell launched a speaking tour to publicize his book Scouting for Boys. This book was not entirely based on the military but showcased techniques which could relate to non-military people like explorers, sailors, backwoodsmen etc.
Scouting for Boys saw tremendous response and later became the foundation for the Boy Scout Handbook. When Baden-Powell first founded Scouting, he was 50 years old. His revolutionary ideas motivated numerous young people from all over the world. It gave them the confidence to do things they would not have dreamt of doing before. |
